Sessizlik

"Silence." A wordless, image-driven study of absence — close-ups of eyes, lips and a cat's whiskers across a red cover.

Early life

Ankara, and a history student

Born on 12 October 1981 in Ankara, he grew up in a modest household as the youngest of three, and studied History at Ankara University.

Acting arrived almost by accident: a televised talent search in the early 2000s pulled him from lecture halls to Istanbul, where he began taking small roles while still finishing his studies.

Breakthrough

From “Kader” to “Fatmagül”

His debut came with “Yabancı Damat” (2004), but it was “Kader” (2006) that established him as a leading man capable of quiet, interior performances.

“Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne?” (2010) turned him into a household name across Türkiye, the Balkans, Latin America and the Middle East, and remains the role most audiences meet him through.

The craft

Stillness as a technique

He is known for underplaying — long pauses, restrained gestures, and letting the camera find the thought before the line.

Later work in “Kara Para Aşk”, “Sefirin Kızı” and “Old Money” leans on that same restraint, trading melodrama for characters who carry their history in silence.

The writer

Books written between shoots

His published works include “Zamansız” and “Sessizlik” — quiet, image-led meditations on time, memory and silence — alongside the story collection “Şimdi Sen Anlat”.

Writing, he has said in interviews, is the part of the work nobody directs — a private counterweight to a very public profession.
